Description:

A framed 16th c. Charter,
dated 22 February 1556/7 by James (Stewart), Commendator of Kelso and Melrose, in favour of John Cochrane and his heirs underwritten, of half a husbandland in Lessudden at present occupied by the said John Cochrane, together with its pertinents (excepting the fishing in the waters of the Tweed), signed by the Commendator, by Thomas Mercer, subprior, and by William Philp, John Hogart, David Hoppringill, John Watson, Bernard Bowston and Thomas Meyn with the seal (damaged) of Melrose Abbey. 9 1/4 x 13 3/8 in. (23.5 x 34 cm)

Other Notes: James Stewart was an illegitimate son of King James V by Elizabeth Shaw. He was born about 1522 and was made Commendator (or titular) Abbot of Kelso Abbey in 1536 and of Melrose Abbey in 1541.

Shipping

The auction house does not have a shipping department, and will not ship items won; however, there are local recommendations for which the contact information can be given. We will assist purchasers in organizing shipping.

REMOVAL OF GOODS: Purchases must be completed and items removed no later than three days after the last session.

ASSISTANCE IN REMOVAL OF GOODS: Maynards may provide assistance to the bidder with packing or removing goods from the auction floor once sold but we are not responsible for any damage which may occur during that time. Large pieces of furniture, rugs, sets of china and crystal, large paintings, etc. may only be removed at the end of that sale session. It is the responsibility of the buyer to bring sufficient wrapping material and boxes, etc. In the event of fire or theft of goods, however caused, Maynards' responsibility will be to the amount of the purchase price only. We are not responsible for the security of goods left after the removal deadline.
