DAME LUCIE RIE (1902-1995)
Lucie Rie fled from the Nazi invasion of her native Austria in 1938 and moved to England. In order to support herself she made ceramic buttons and jewellery.
She had a small studio in London and her group of friends and associates included influential potters such as Hans Coper and Bernard Leach experimenting in new styles and classical Japanese influences.
Rie produced her own style of light, thinly potted wares and porcelains that are widely sought after by collectors and museums internationally.
The small conical bowl illustrated here will be offered in our March 11th sale and is expected to sell in the region of $10,000-$15,000.
