Maillol was one of the most influential and innovative artists and sculptors of the 20th century.
In his eyes the highlight of his life’s works was probably his sculptures entitled La Mediterranee, a simple seated nude figure, her left arm raised to her hair as she sits on a plain plinth.
His model and partner of many years, Dina Vierny, described him as one of the pioneers of abstraction and modernism in sculpture. Examples of his work can be seen in many of the major museums and galleries around the world, including the Maillol Museum and the Musee d’Orsay in Paris.
An important version of this bronze, consigned by a Vancouver family and purchased from a New York gallery in the 1960s, will be offered in our auction on June 24th.
